Meta’s version of Twitter, ‘Threads’, Publicly Available on July 6

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has confirmed that their version of “Twitter” will be launched around the world this week. The app, called “Threads”, will be publicly available on July 6.

Due to increased data privacy protections in the EU, Threads won’t be available right away for European users. For the rest of the world, you’ll be able to start building your threads on Thursday.

Meta hopes that among those using the app immediately will be higher-profile, widely-known users. With high-profile users posting on the app often and from the start, Meta hopes this will give Threads the instant notoriety and legitimacy the app may need to convince as many Twitter users as possible to jump ship.

Business Insider has already posted that a plethora of high-profile users have been sent an on-boarding guide that recommends posting two times per day “during early access” to become accustomed to the app.

In the guide, Meta also notes that each person who joins Threads will receive a number that is meant to indicate the order in which they signed up. This effort is intended to offer a certain degree of social clout if they have a lower number.

It has been reported that in an effort to create buzz for the new app, Instagram has reached out to recognizable global names such as Oprah, the Dalai Lama, and Gary Vaynerchuk. If higher-profile names and influencers do make the jump to Threads, the efforts could work. If you’re favorite celebrities for example begin posting early and often on Threads - their followers could be influenced to download the app just to see what they’re saying - leading you to gradually making the switch to the new app.

There won’t be a major learning curve with Threads, either. The app’s aesthetic is virtually identical to that of Twitter, so eliminating the need to learn a completely new app is certainly diminished.

Threads will be available at 10am EST on July 6 for download.
