Warnings from Anthropic (Claude AI) & Google DeepMind

The sudden departure of Anthropic and Open AI employees sent a shock wave after they expressed their fears of what AI untethered could unleash.

A few days ago, the CEO of Anthropic (Claude), Dario Amodei called for the AI industry to slow the pace of development and said Anthropic would welcome independent evaluators permanent access to its models - so they can assess whether the company was following its safety commitments. Then, after Amodei's announcement this past weekend, two key tech CEOs, including OpenAI chief Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, said they agreed with calls to slow the pace the development of AI models.

Coxon posted his concerns on X, formerly known as Twitter, about the future for us humans and both companies’ carelessness on AI development.

Jacob Coxon, a former researcher for AI, not only quit his job this past week but took to posting a warning on his Twitter account that not only is the technology at a pace so rapid its developers can hardly keep up with it, but that it possesses the capability to wipe out humanity in ten years. On top of the alarming incident where Open AI’s test bots broke out of its testing environment to attack agents of fellow AI company Hugging Face, Coxon notes that both companies are so wrapped up in their AI arms race they’re neglecting to see the bigger picture of consequences their technology possesses.

His posts have 100 million+ views - echoing people’s fears about AI for months. Their disapproval for this technology grew with the advanced development of data centers and how they learned about the effects on the environment, on nearby residents, and the increased electricity costs for the average consumer.

Plus, beyond just AI bots going rogue - a growing number of people in the U.S. now feel that that data centers could have a lasting effect on the environment and its surrounding residents, where it will suck up natural resources and destroy much needed farmland to fuel billionaires’ projects and push for non-stop advancements.

Although some political leaders have called for a more regulated approach to AI, Coxon claimed in his social media posts that exclusive control over AI could wind up taking over powerful resources on its own and lead to further human detriment. Fellow AI researcher Evan Hubinger stated, ‘Anthropic is trying its best,’ whereas Coxon mentions neither Anthropic nor Open AI is acting responsibly.

Even if these tech leaders reevaluate their direction on this powerful technology, how much can we truly take their word - since there is still a push to build more data centers, while also seeing an uptick in cyberattacks, where bots have proved that they can act without any human direction? Now, AI models, with the direction of hackers, have the power to reconfigure their own cybersecurity agents to perform attacks on the same system they were made to protect. It’s now come to the point where AI researchers are warning that AI could end human existence.

Stay tuned, there will be more warnings from AI researchers sounding the alarm on how AI will continue to go rogue. At SpaceBound Solutions. we embrace the positive ways AI can streamline processes and improve productivity but we will always remain focused on how human connections between our engineers, technicians and our clients will still be a part of our core mission, taking care of our customers.
