New Malware is Spreading via USB Drives

A new strain of malware is spreading at an alarming rate around the globe. A Chinese state-sponsored cybercrime group called Camaro Dragon is spreading malware via infected USB drivers.

The name of the main variant of this malware is called WispRider. It uses the HopperTrick launcher to spread via USB – and even has the ability to bypass certain antivirus solutions.

WispRider began infecting machines in SouthEast Asia, but has since spread to other regions of the world. The Check Point Incident Response Team says, “The prevalence and nature of the attacks using self-propagating USB malware demonstrate the need of protecting against those, even for organizations that may not be the direct targets of such campaigns.”

USB malware infections seems to have spread to Myanmar, South Korea, Great Britain, India and Russia as well.

Check Point notes that WispRider can also work with other tools used by Camaro Dragon to accomplish attacks. “All of them share infrastructure and operational goals,” claim Check Point.

The longer the malware propagates, the more sophisticated it is becoming, so using proper endpoint protection measures is critical to ensuring your device stays safe.
