New AI Feature in Adobe Photoshop Allows Users to Edit Images in a Brand New Way

Adobe Photoshop users will be able to use a new generative AI tool that will allow users to edit photos by using text prompts.

The new feature, called ‘Generative Fill’, is one of the first to use Adobe’s AI image generator Firefly. Firefly was released as a web-only beta back in March. Generative Fill, which launches today in beta, will see a full release in Photoshop later in the year.

As a new tool available in Photoshop, Generative Fill will work within the individual layers of a Photoshop file. The tool affords the user the ability to edit images in ways such as extending am image’s borders and generating object to add to the image.

Some preliminary demonstrations show that the new tool needs some work, but its impressive none-the-less. In one demo, AI-generated cars and puddles didn’t look like natural parts of the image. However it’s handling of backgrounds, blanks spaces and mimicking light sources were impressive.

Another important element of Firefly is the data it uses to learn and train itself to make requested edits. Adobe stated that Firefly is only trained on content it has the right to use – which would include Adobe Stock images and content without copyright restrictions.  In theory, this would suggest that anything created using the Generative Fill feature should be able to be used commercially without the fear of legal retaliation.

Another Generative Fill feature is that of “Content Credentials”. Think of it as a “Nutrition Label” that links attribution data to the image before it’s shared. The intent of these credentials is to inform viewers if the content was created using artificial intelligence.

“By integrating Firefly directly into workflows as a creative co-pilot, Adobe is accelerating ideation, exploration and production for all of our customers,” Ashley Still, Senior Vice President of Digital Media at Adobe said. “Generative Fill combines the speed and ease of generative AI with the power and precision of Photoshop, empowering customers to bring their visions to life at the speed of their imaginations.”

The new Generative Fill feature is not a part of the update Adobe users received today in the full version of their product, however, users can try it out by downloading the desktop beta app or as a module in the Firefly beat app. Generative Fill will not be made widely available to Photoshop users until the second half of 2023.
