Instagram Begins Allowing Users Ability to Add More Links in their Bio

Instagram has begun rolling out an update today to all users, allowing them to add up to five links in their bio, instead of just one. The update will allow users to redirect their followers to external links such as their online business, causes they care about, or even their accounts on other social platforms. The announcement was made by Mark Zuckerberg himself, who stated that this was “probably one of the most requested features we’ve had.”

Instagram users have been requesting this feature for a very long time, and the social media giant is finally granting it – but not before alternative companies were given the opportunity to take advantage of Instagram’s shortcomings.

Sites like Liketree were originally born out of necessity - and gave Instagram and other social platform users the ability to redirect followers to several locations from one link.  Instagram’s initial reluctance to allow users to link to several other locations was due to the fear that engagement on their app would drop.

TikTok also limits the number of links you can place in your bio, unless you have a business account.

Some believe that Instagram’s decision to allow all users to provide more links in their bio was made because they view it as a competitive advantage over TikTok, whose regular users complain about the strict limits that are put on their profiles.

To add more links to your bio on Instagram, users simply need to tap “Edit Profile”, then “Links”, then “Add external link”. They’ll then be permitted to drag and drop them into the order they prefer.

When a user clicks on one of the links in an Instagram bio, the link will open up inside the app itself. In order for a user to open the link on an external browser, they’ll need to click on the three-dot menu in the top right, and tap “open in system browser”.
