AI in the Classroom could help Kick-Start a Career in Computer Science

Lessons about artificial intelligence (AI) can provide middle and high school students with an excellent introduction to the computer sciences.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts Computer Science (CS) and Information Technology (IT) employment will continue to grow between 2021 and 2031, and is likely to add over 680,000 new jobs to the market.

To create awareness about the lucrative career opportunities in these fields, middle and high school teachers may want to prepare lesson plans that include artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies that are impacting multiple industries.

Seeking out and considering AI-related careers can be promising for youth.  Here’s why:

  • The World Economic Forum lists AI and machine-learning specialists second on the list of occupations with increasing demand

  • AI careers are plentiful, but there aren’t enough qualified applicants to fill open positions

  • AI professionals can typically earn well over six-figures in salary

  • AI jobs are flexible and can include full-time or part-time entrepreneurs, researchers, and consultants

Like the higher-order thinking skills already taught in the classroom, CS skills are earned with time, practice, and repetition.  Educators can begin introducing students to how AI works in other technologies like machine learning, gaming and eSports, and blockchain technology.

Machine learning is a type of AI that allows computers to learn without human programming, and is used in apps like language translators, social media algorithms, and streaming services to suggest content that you may like.

eSports is a form of competitive video gaming with a vast ecosystem, including game publishers, streaming platforms, products, leagues, and competitive events.  An introduction to eSports can help students understand how AI impacts gaming.

Blockchain is being touted by some as the future of the internet, and can be paired with AI to improve data security and reliable audit trails.  Blockchain technology creates a growing demand for software engineers who can properly utilize blockchain to validate and record digital transactions through the exchange of cryptocurrencies like bitcoin.

Teachers can use these emerging technologies to help students understand the growing impact of AI in our everyday world, and to help spark an interest in the computer sciences that may also inspire them to pursue the industry further, into higher education, to expand their knowledge so they can get paid for doing what they love.

Think of how many students could be set on a path to employable skills and passion-aligned learning if they were jump-started at school.
