As we navigate through a technology driven world in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, we’re all taking preventative measures to reduce the chance of the virus spreading. The most common recommended practices that are being encouraged of us include washing our hands with soap and water, social distancing by staying at least 6 feet away from others, and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces.

A frequently touched surface can be anything from a doorknob to a countertop. Although we’re encouraged to stay home to help mitigate the spread of the virus, a trip to the grocery store or bank might be necessary.  With that, another frequently touched surface – a self-serve kiosk or digital sign – may be something you’ll need to interact with.

Whether an organization or a patron, here are several tips we all can take to make sure that digital signs and kiosks stay germ-free during this global pandemic:

Clean the Sign or Kiosk’s Screen
As per the CDC’s advice, frequently touched surfaces need to be cleaned on a regular basis. At a grocery store for instance, many organizations these days have self-serve aisle where shoppers can check themselves out. These self-checkout lanes can have screens that are potentially being touched hundreds of times. This requires employees to constantly clean these screens to help stop the spread of the virus. Organizations need to remember to be diligent about this.

Use a Soft, Lint-Free Cloth
To clean a kiosk or digital sign, clean it with a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth. Avoid using an abrasive cloth such as a paper towel that can spread link or damage a digital screen’s surface.

Start with Soap and Water then move to Approved Cleaners
To begin cleaning digital screens, it’s recommended to start with soap and water. Squeeze out excess liquid before cleaning, and let the screen dry before moving on to approved cleaners. Next, use an approved cleaner to disinfect the screen.  The CDC recommends a solution that is 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% distilled water.

Do No Use Highly Concentrated Solutions
Making sure your screen is clean is more important than ever. However it is still important to keep in mind that you need to use a solution that is save for your screen. Here is a list of products that should be avoided when choosing a solution to clean your screen:

  • Ammonia

  • Thinner

  • Benzene

  • Strong Alkali lyles

  • Strong Solvents

  • Acids

  • Detergents with Fluoride

  • Abrasive Cleaners

  • Isopropyl Alcohol with greater than a 70% concentration

  • Methyl or Ethyl Alcohol with greater than 35% concentration

Don’t Allow Liquids to get Inside the Screen or Kiosk
When you are cleaning screens, be sure to take precaution against allowing liquid to seep into the screen or kiosk itself. The best way to prevent this is to spray the cloth with the solution you are using, rather than spraying the screen.
