As a tech company, we’re always looking for great talent. It’s always a challenge, so here are some tips on giving yourself a leg up at any company.
First things first, figure out what your career goals are and what skills you’d like to acquire. Setting up future achievements can allow you to understand what’s necessary to reach those goals. Forbes recommends looking through LinkedIn jobs to search for what other companies and positions want when looking for a well-rounded candidate. Not that you need to search for a new job if you’re comfortable at your current position, but it definitely gives you a leg up on what others look for – and catapulting yourself to higher standards at your current job, too.
Along with reviewing necessary skillsets, continue researching the latest trends and news within your own industry and areas of interest. Recent articles will not only keep you in the loop of what’s currently happening but will ultimately give you a leg up on what to expect. Staying knowledgeable is a great start to proficiency, but if you really want to accelerate your career, taking courses on developing your desired skills will open many doors. Ask your work for a subscription to an online course (or access one yourself) or find free modules. There’s no better way to get hands-on experience than earning a certificate in said skillset. The key though, if you really want to become well versed, is to remain consistent and make small progress each day so the content doesn’t immediately leave your brain.
If you’re unable to access courses, try attending conferences or volunteering at events in your industry of interest! These provide chances to connect with others who can initially lend support and opportunities to teach you about their own experiences and give you hands on learning. It’s important that when you make these connections, be sure to nurture them to expand your knowledge and understandings of what you hope to grow in. But don’t treat these connections as purely transactional or for your own personal gain - this can lead to your career and reputation suffering. Lend as much support to the people you meet as you can.
Which brings us to our last point - along with gaining insights from conferences and networking, volunteer at similar organizations that allow you to put yourself out there and teach others about your learned skills. It’s a great opportunity to give others the same experiences you picked up on and help them pursue their own growth as well as yours.
Given how rapidly trends change, especially in the technology field, we advise you to stay on top in any way you can, whether it’s through reading recent news articles, engaging in events, or learning a new system. Remaining out of the loop leaves you with limited interest and outlets. Stay engaged and on top!
