ChatGPT Users Report Seeing Chat History and Payment Page Screens for Other Users
Concern is growing around ChatGPT as users are expressing data privacy issues. Some users are reporting that queries from other users are showing up in their chat histories. One user, who reported their specific issue on twitter, feared that their account had been hacked when they logged in and noticed queries in Chinese in their chat history.
This bug has created a concerning buzz about user and data privacy. If a user entered personal information in their chat history, there is the potential that it was displayed for other users, which is a major security issue.
One silver lining, if you could call it that, is that users who have experienced this potential violation in privacy have noted that only the titles of the chats display on the sidebar. If you actually click on the chat to display the chat, it will not load.
Additionally, it appears that ChatGPT only displays generic terms when showing chat histories, leaving out any type of personally identifiable information.
However, since the discovery of the chat history bug, users have also discovered a much more serious issue. Some users have reported seeing a payment page for other users, which could expose email addresses to random users. This would present a much bigger problem for OpenAI.
The bugs in ChatGPT do highlight the risk a user takes when using a public service such as the AI chatbot. OpenAI’s own privacy policy states that they can share “aggregated information like general user statistics with third parties, publish such aggregated information or make such aggregated information generally available.”
