Emma Willard School, a boarding school in New York, is one of the latest in a constant string of educational facilities getting struck by ransomware attacks. Personal financial information and employee social security numbers were part of the sensitive information stolen in the attack.

Officials at the school are not sure if social security numbers of students were stolen as well.

School head Jennifer Rao said, “We have notified law enforcement and continue to work closely with external cybersecurity experts to confirm what data was accessed.”

Emma Willard school officials did not offer details on how the school handled the attacks.

“We were fortunate that out IT security measures discovered the attack early and we took immediate steps to stop the attack and respond to partnership with external cybersecurity experts. Unfortunately, some data was illegally accessed and removed from our systems,” Rao said in a letter to school community.

The school is providing free credit and identity theft monitoring services to those who were affected.
